Happy New Year From Ask Me PR!

6 January 2010 · Leave a Comment

We’re very much looking forward to the first quarter of 2010, as we continue to work with some incredibly talented artists. At the end of last year Neil McSweeney supported fellow Sheffield songsmith Richard Hawley. On the 23rd January he’ll be opening for him once more at the Royal Festival Hall, London. Fans of Mr McSweeney will be pleased to know that a single from his second album, Shoreline is set for release in the Spring. You can hear a selection of his tracks here.

Building on the success of their much lauded debut single ‘Live and Live Lonely’, My Albatross release their new single ‘Rich Man’s Daughter’ early in 2010. This time the boys couple their trademark alt rock guitars with Beach Boys-esque rock and roll harmonies. The haunting B-side ‘I Don’t Love You’ features a different arrangement of band members ,and is sure to surprise and amaze you in equal measure.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for exciting new music. Whilst not wanting to give too much, let’s just say that we’re very pleased to be working with some exciting new bands this year. Check the blog for more details soon…

Cosmo Jarvis – Cosmo Jarvis

15 November 2009 · 2 Comments

Out Now!

“…West Country Jamie T or Eminem…” Q Magazine

“Cosmo Jarvis has made an album of teenage angst and the like and it’s perfectly adequate. But he has a new song called ‘Gay Pirates’ which hints at a deeper talent. It’s vivid, violent and the most tragically moving love song we’ve heard all year….evidence we might have a miniature Tom Waits on our hands ”

Dan Martin, NME Magazine Sept ‘09

“His debut album is a crammed double album of teenage angst, desire and social comment. It’s a bold intriguing mess that suggests he has an exciting future”

Neil McCormick, Daily Telegraph Nov ‘09

“Inarguably gifted he makes films as well as writing, playing and brilliantly engineering his inventive music. A fab new talent with imagination overload.”

James McNair, MOJO, Nov ‘09

“A man who believes in letting everything out. His debut album comes across as a daffy West Country Jamie T or Eminem

Ian Harrison, Q, Nov ‘09

“Jarvis has the potential to be a future Springsteen. Certainly his songs would do the young Boss proud. One of the best debuts of the year and a force to watch in the years ahead

Daily Mirror, Oct 30th ‘09

“A veritable one man band his toe tapping and foot stomping tales of love and lust slot in well with the modern troubadours such as Jamie T and Frank Turner. His confidence reigns on this accomplished double album ”

AOL Music online Oct ‘09

“It’s a completely extraordinary record – it’s homemade, all by himself. He shot a video himself for a total cost of  £125 which looks like a really really great  cinematic black and white movie”

Tom Robinson BBC 6 Music

Cosmo Jarvis

Championed by the undeniably influential Zane Lowe (Radio 1), Cosmo’s self-titled debut album is almost guaranteed to make waves. This young, new, self-reliant artist doesn’t believe in conformity, cop-outs or half measures. With so many ideas, musical styles and inspiration pumping through his 19-year old imagination it is little wonder that his eponymous album was going to be anything other than an unconventional affair. The two disc album delves into every corner of the teenage mind, from upbeat, poppier tracks such as Jessica Alba’s Number, She’s Got You  and Crazy Screwed Up Lady to the darker, more sinister Mummy’s Been Drinking and Problems. Utilising everything from recorders to banjos, Cosmo Jarvis proves beyond reasonable doubt that he is the musical troubadour we always suspected he was!

Cosmo is also a film-maker, and contributes regularly to Babelgum and YouTube. Check out his videos for ‘She’s got You’, which was his first single and ‘Problems’ (see post below), from his current single.

Cosmo Jarvis – ‘Problems’ video

14 November 2009 · Leave a Comment

“says more about  f**ked up families in 4 mins than

most documentaries or social reports do in an hour”

Mark Coles (Radio 4)

‘Problems’, the second track from Cosmo’s double A-side single ‘You Got Your Head/ Problems’ has an excellent new video to accompany it. Written, directed and edited by Cosmo himself, the video was filmed in a courtroom at Totnes Guildhall, a prison cell in Brixham Heritage Museum, and, like most of his other videos, in his mother’s house in Totnes. Each and every one of the actors are amateurs – friends, family and innocent bystanders roped in by Cosmo to help.

‘You Got Your Head/ Problems’ is released on 8th November on Wall of Sound. Cosmo’s self-titled debut album drops on 16th November

Cosmo Jarvis - You Got Your Head/ Problems

Fresh from supporting local superstars Muse in Teignmouth, the double A-side follow up to the Devon via New Jersey 20 year old’s debut single She’s Got You takes us into new territory. You Got Your Head is a more up-tempo offering perfectly showcasing Cosmo’s precocious musicality and his winning way with words in a brilliantly twisted yet perfect pop three-minuter. Problems takes us into darker territory with searingly astute lyrical content balancing against a ‘f*ck you’ chorus. The Wall of Sound signing is also embarking on a UK Tour during October and November, so now’s the time to catch him live.

Alice Russell – Let Us Be Loving video

2 November 2009 · Leave a Comment

The video for Alice’s forthcoming single ‘Let Us Be Loving’ has finally seen the light of day. And we’re glad that it did! You can also see Alice’s stunning cover of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ on Canal + TV here

Bristol based country-soul sextet Phantom Limb seamlessly fuse waltz sounds with gospel and a classic blues rhythm in this elegant and enigmatic single preceding the re-release of their self titled debut album. Ask Me PR In The City – Day 3!

21 October 2009 · Leave a Comment

Saving Aimee

In The City

Shmoo

Tuesday night saw the final push for ITC and Ask Me PR. Early doors this evening, at the Roadhouse, were Saving Aimee. Polished, slick pop music from these six young confident men at a 14+ night to allow their army of younger fans to be there too. The set was full of energy, with potential hit after hit . They played their BBC Radio 1 playlisted single ‘We’re The Good Guys‘ and the audience (mainly young girls) loved it.  Another crowd pleaser was their current single ‘Fresh Since ‘88‘, check out the video here.

Straight after Saving Aimee, and it was a dash around the corner to Moho Live for the second BBC Introducing ITC night. This evening it was the turn of the mighty Shmoo to assault the ears of the crowd. The video for their new single Amnesia, which was filmed at their show at the Manchester International Festival with Delphic this summer, can be seen here.  The two keyboard players and vocalists (who are brothers) give it their all, and to see their hypnotic live drummer in action is really something. It’s hard to believe they are playing electronic music without a laptop in sight!

Well, ITC has drawn to a close for another year. But that doesn’t mean you won’t be hearing much from our roster of artists until then. On the contrary, this is just the beginning…

Ask Me PR In The City – Day 2!

20 October 2009 · Leave a Comment

In The CityThe CordelsMy AlbatrossThe Vanguards

So… Monday night and Day 2 of ITC. A HUGE night for Ask Me PR as we had 3 bands playing (including one playing in two venues).

At BBC Introducing In The City @ MOHO Live, the excellent My Albatross give a sterling performance despite an onstage nightmare involving a broken guitar neck! Many thanks to The Vanguards for helping out with a replacement.

Following that, The Vanguards themselves went down a storm, leaving many industry people reeling, probably in shock at the force of what they had witnessed. What an exhilarating performance!

A little later, and with the focus shifting to the Mint Lounge, The Vanguards played their second gig of the evening (again impressive in every way). Last (and most DEFINITELY not least) of the night were The Cordels. Playing a set with two new tracks added (check out their MySpace to hear them) the response from industry folks (“the best band I’ve seen during ITC”) was fantastic.

All in all, a massive success for the bands! Well done guys!

THE TRAVELLING BAND – Waterfall

24 July 2009 · 1 Comment

Single released on 10 August 2009

travelling band 100809Initially conceived as a one-off live performance to mark the 20th anniversary of the release of The Stone Roses’ classic debut album, THE TRAVELLING BAND’s version of ‘Waterfall’ is at once disarming and enchanting in equal measure – put simply, it’s breathtaking. Replacing the liquid dynamics of the original with a stark, beautiful emphasis on the lyrics and melody, the emotional core of the song takes over. It’s an entirely new interpretation of a hugely loved classic and yet another example of the band’s perfect skill at fusing their folk, country and rock influences with their own distinctive sunshine-pop sensibility – so take a break from your day and escape to THE TRAVELLING BAND’s world.

Single released on 17 August 2009

the cordels 170809THE CORDELS’ debut release sees the Warrington three-piece digging deep for their lyrical themes whilst deftly crafting an anthemic, indie-pop classic. An early demo of the track found its way to top producer, Jim Lowe [Stereophonics, Foo Fighters, The Charlatans], who immediately offered his mixing skills to polish it into the gem it is now. THE CORDELS have won airplay in some well-respected quarters. Radio 1’s Zane Lowe gives early support, as does Tom Robinson for BBC 6 Music and Loz Guest at Kerrang! Radio. THE CORDELS are drawing comparisons with the early days of that other classic three-piece, The Police, with each band member bringing a simmering passion and an effortless cool to an incredible live show.

NEWS SO FAR THIS WEEK

17 August 2009 · Leave a Comment

THE CORDELS were Clint Boon’s ‘Record of the week’ last week on Xfm and will be in session this Sunday [23 August] on Pete Mitchell’s ‘Razor Cuts’ show between 6 and 8pm. Xfm’s Jon Hillcock’s influential ‘New Noise’ also played the single on his tastemaker show on Sunday and Steve Lamacq gave the single a play on his BBC Radio 1 show. Absolute Extreme added them to their cool playlist and support around the UK from specialist taste makers – it’s a great start for an unsigned band doing it for themselves.

THE VANGUARDS - Their Razor Cuts session on Xfm didn’t get aired last week due to studio technical problems but fortunately it will definitely go out this week [6pm-8pm, Sunday 23 August]. The Vanguards’ single ‘Regress’ has also been added to NME Radio’s ’spot play’ playlist.

TEAM WATERPOLO - Last week the guys were Record of the week on Xfm Manchester’s breakfast show with Pete Mitchell, this week they are drive-times ROW with Clint Boon. On Saturday [15 August] the guys found themselves playing in front of thousands of people at Rock FM’s ‘Rock in the Park’ alongside Tinchy Stryder, VV Brown and Peter Andre no less!

MY ALBATROSS - This debut is released on 14 September and is already receiving a fantastic reaction from National and Regional specialist radio.  They’re currently back at Sandhill Studio recording the follow up to Live and Live Lonely.

COSMO JARVIS - Watch out for this 19 year old, it’s early days but we think you’re going to hear an awful lot more about Cosmo. His next single ‘Jessica Alba’s number’ should see him getting a lot of attention.

SAVING AIMEE - Their next single ‘Fresh since 88′ is pencilled in for Sunday 12 October and their album for 19  October just before their support slot with Fightstar.

THE VALENTINES – Their single ‘You Make Me Me’ is confirmed for a 21 September release and already picking up some good plays. More news on the duo soon!

ASK ME PR work the Mercury again!

2 September 2009 · Leave a Comment

Manchester-based music pluggers Ask Me PR scoop the regional radio and TV account for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize for the 16th year running.

North west music fans may be disappointed at the absence of regional bands in this year’s Mercury music prize list of nominees, but there is one Manchester-based member of the UK music industry that’s been quietly winning with annual award since 1994. And that’s Ask Me PR!

From M-People’s 1994 win with Elegant Slumming, Badly Drawn Boy in 2000 through to local heroes and last year’s winners Elbow, Ask Me PR have been charged with making sure all shortlisted albums and the competition itself are featured on regional radio. No mean feat considering that from Cornwall to Orkney, and Norwich to Aberystwyth there’s around 400 radio stations to service!

Ask Me PR’s managing director, Liam Walsh: “We’re extremely proud of our long association with this prestigious competition.

There have been many highlights over the years. Apart from all the great Manchester bands that have won, seeing Antony and the Johnsons claim the prize was a very special moment.

Though it’s not all been fun, glitz and glamour. When the phenomenal PJ Harvey won and accepted her prize from NYC it was the day of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre. We’d heard what had happened on the way down to London and it was naturally a sombre rather than celebratory evening.”

Ask Me PR’s skill in gaining national and regional broadcast exposure for emerging pop talent is no secret among major record labels and independent music managers trying to break new acts into a highly competitive and crowded market place. The likes of The Killers, Oasis, Bjork, Moby, Doves, Prince and Badly Drawn Boy are amongst the long list of artists to have all used Ask Me’s services on their way to the big time.

Of the current crop of Ask Me artists, Liam says: “We expect great things of newcomers The Cordels, Cosmo Jarvis and Neil McSweeney.

It was a fabulous experience to have an unknown Badly Drawn Boy win his Mercury while on our rosta and of course we’d love to see history repeated with one of our new acts!”

This sun-baked ray of infectious pop-dance magic already sees the versatile Honey Ryder brightening the Top 10 of the Commercial Dance Chart and creating sparks on dancefloors around the country. The single also features the Bimbo Jones remix! Check out the band’s MySpace and their website for more information.

Saving Aimee - Fresh Since '88

Saving Aimee’s follow up to the Radio 1 playlisted We’re the Good Guys, enlists the enigmatic frontman of  The Darkness, Justin Hawkins, on production duties. The resulting piece of high-energy pop-rock, with its rock-laced solos and 80s synthesisers reminiscent of Duran Duran, surely can’t fail to satisfy Saving Aimee’s army of loyal fans. With the video being aired on Kerrang TV and The Box already, not to mention their forthcoming tour supporting Fightstar and Go Audio, Fresh Since ‘88 looks set to cement Saving Aimee as national treasures!

Ask Me PR In The City Day 1!

In The CityNeil McSweeney

Day 1 of In The City, and to kick things off it’s an early show for Sheffield’s Neil McSweeney. Hot on the heels of an excellent album launch party at The Luminaire in London, this  gig at Oldham St’s infamous Night & Day was another real triumph. With support from his backing band The Gents, Neil impressed everyone with a mixture of new tracks from the album ‘Shoreline’ and some crowd-pleasing favourites such as London Road and Postcards.

Really nice to see the conference opening with a personal favourite of mine. Looking forward to more from Ask Me artists at ITC over the next few days.

Hoping to see you there,

Liam
